Ontario set to avoid ‘over-committing’ on new, big energy projects

Shawn McCarthy The Globe and Mail- November 19,2013

Still reeling from its $1-billion gas-plant debacle, Ontario’s Liberal government says it will avoid making commitments for large-scale new power projects.

The province is expected to release its new long-term energy plan within a few weeks, as it faces fierce criticism over the cost of cancelling two gas-fired power plants and rising consumer prices.

Energy Minister Bob Chiarelli said the government will commit only to projects that address short-term power needs, and will provide annual updates on the rapidly changing supply and demand picture.

What exactly does he mean when he says “avoid making commitments for large-scale new power projects”?  Better get my liars dictionary out so I can interpret.  Huh, it says here that they will keep plastering our backyards with industrial wind turbine installations.  Everbody should get one of these dictionaries.  Handy.

Threat of bat fatalities stalls Maine wind project

By RACHEL OHM Morning Sentinel

BINGHAM — The review of a proposed 62-turbine wind farm project in this Somerset County town has been put on hold in part because of concerns about  the danger the turbines might pose to bats being threatened by white-nose syndrome, a rapidly spreading fungal disease.

Little brown bats (pictured here) and northern long-eared bats are currently being evaluated for listing under the Maine Endangered Species Act and also the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

There is no estimated date for when the Bingham wind project might be approved by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, Dan Courtemanch, project manager for the agency’s Division of Land Resource Regulation, said Monday. A decision was originally expected this month, he said.

French Tilt Against More Wind Farms

The Japan Times  Nov. 18 2013

PARIS – Plans to dot France with wind farms are facing fierce opposition from critics worried they will blight a landscape that has helped make the country the world’s top tourist destination.

France relies heavily on nuclear power but is working to shift to renewable energy sources and triple by 2020 its number of wind turbines from the current 4,000 that are spread across 1,127 sites.

But opponents are urging the government to tread carefully so as not to damage France’s thousands of kilometers of stunningly beautiful countryside — which range from Europe’s longest strip of beaches to the peaks of the Alps.

Some critics have already won court cases outlawing turbines, and more legal challenges are on the way.

Paul Calandra, parliamentary secretary to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, issued a statement this week commending the move by Australia’s recently elected Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

“Canada applauds the decision by Prime Minister Abbott to introduce legislation to repeal the carbon tax,” the statement reads.

“The Australian prime minister’s decision will be noticed around the world and sends an important message.”

The Conservatives have used the carbon tax issue to great effect domestically. The government has long accused the Opposition NDP of wanting to impose “a tax on everything,” a claim NDP Leader Tom Mulcair has vehemently denied.

The Conservatives campaigned successfully against Liberal Leader Stephane Dion and his “Green Shift” policy in the 2008 election, using the same “tax on everything” line. Dion’s plan, which included a carbon tax, was derided by Harper as a cash grab and was rejected by voters at the polls.

COP19 – Now The Fifth Successive UNFCCC Failure Is Complete

I truly hope that this madscam is coming to a finale and its not wishful thinking. There is so much corruption continuing as we speak and write. In our communities, our schools, our politics -local and otherwise. This mess will take a long time to clean up and its still rolling along, spreading disease.

Tory Aardvark's avatarTory Aardvark

That’s 5 UNFCCC COP failures in a row, an unprecedented record of failure, each Conference of the Parties has disintegrated faster than the COP that preceded it, with COP19 holding the current record.

There was never any doubt, from the outset that COP19 was going to be the biggest failure since records began, what has been surprising is the speed of that collapse, COP19 was effectively dead before it had begun.

It has just taken 5 days for COP19 to realize it was dead and hit the floor.

The make or break issue for COP19 was “loss and damage“, wealth redistribution to us regular folks and that great Green Socialist Barack Obama made sure that loss and damage was deader than Osama Bin Laden, before COP19 even started.
