Germany’s Energy Poverty: How Electricity Became a Luxury Good

Germany’s agressive and reckless expansion of wind and solar power has come with a hefty pricetag for consumers, and the costs often fall disproportionately on the poor. Government advisors are calling for a completely new start.
If you want to do something big, you have to start small. That’s something German Environment Minister Peter Altmaier knows all too well. The politician, a member of the center-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has put together a manual of practical tips on how everyone can make small, everyday contributions to the shift away from nuclear power and toward green energy. The so-called Energiewende, or energy revolution, is Chancellor Angela Merkel’s project of the century.

And a recent article that has Germany’s energy figures from 2012. Fossil fuel plants achieve a capacity factor of 80% or more, nuclear at 94%, solar at 11% and wind at 17%. And still its full steam ahead for Germany and the green enviro nuts.

Help Message Loud and Clear on Gobles Grove Beach

On a cold and windy Labour Day Monday, wind warriors from all parts of Ontario united at Gobles Grove Beach in the midst of an un-welcome CAW Turbine. Our Mothers Against Turbines bus, filled with supporters from Haldimand, West Lincoln and Wainfleet, walked beside our fellow Ontarians, sending a message to Kathleen Wynne and wind companies everywhere that Turbines are not welcome on our doorsteps!

Hundreds of people were positioned on the beach where the word HELP was spelled out in advance of our arrival. United and in position, we gathered into the letter H, trying to beat a Guinness Book of World Record!

The event was well organized and even included a sound equipment demonstration. The SWEAR and STOP groups are actually able to monitor infrasound, utilizing hundreds in testing equipment and software, that can then be analyzed by a sound/noise expert.

The Charter Challenge, brought forth by Julian Falconer, if successful, will set a precedent and will assist ALL those following. This action has the potential to shift the burden of proof from the need to prove serious harm to human health to the need to prove the possibility of harm, a much lower threshold.

Thank you STOP and SWEAR for organizing this event! It has managed to bring Ontarians closer together in this battle against the Liberal Government and Big Corporate Wind Companies.

Corrupt Electricity Reporting

Here is a time line to help readers understand the background behind some of the Toronto Star’s reporting of Ontario electricity news.

November 23, 2010: In an email exchange Ben Chin, Ontario Power Authority VP, former Ontario Liberal candidate, and also former senior media advisor to then Premier Dalton McGuinty discusses with senior communications staffer, Alicia Johnston, employed in the Ontario Minister of Energy’s office. Johnston complains about negative reporting by Tom Adams and proposes that “We’ve got to get him (Tyler Hamilton) out as an ‘expert’ commentator.” Chin replies, “We need to throw him (Tyler Hamilton) some work.”

Ben Chin has presented himself as an authority on politics and journalistic ethics, including this interview soon after he left his then prominent career in broadcast journalism.

May 3, 2011: The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO), closely supervised by the Ontario government, released a report on “Smart Grid” development in the province. The Corporate Partners Committee participating in the report included a Who’s Who of international energy technology firms selling Smart Grid concepts around the world. The Ontario government’s electricity policies heavily emphasize promoting Smart Grid. In a footnote, the report thanks Tyler Hamilton for his assistance in preparing this report.

Here are two examples of Toronto Star Business Section articles that subsequently appeared on the subject of Smart Grid authored by Tyler Hamilton. Both news reports omit mention of Hamilton’s IESO funding:

Here is the complete response of the IESO, issued earlier today, when I sought details on how much Tyler Hamilton got paid for his work on the Smart Grid report:

Tyler Hamilton was the successful respondent to a competitive procurement process for the delivery of this report.

The IESO uses competitive procurement processes, such as RFQs or RFPs, to evaluate proposals according to a pre-determined set of criteria – including costs and experience. As with standard procurement practice, all bids submitted through this process are subject to non-disclosure agreements.

On Twitter, I have been asking Tyler Hamilton to disclose how much the Ontario government and agents have paid him and his associates like Corporate Knights. As of this posting, no response from Hamilton has been forthcoming.

The evidence presented here indicates that Tyler Hamilton’s electricity reporting in the Toronto Star has been corrupted by a conflict of interest. I have previously reported on evidence of similar politicization developing within the Ontario public service. The Ontario public service has contributed to a cover-up of the gas scandal that includes responding to inquiries from the Information and Privacy Commissioner with information she has identified as “inaccurate and incomplete”.

Given the importance of an independent press and a professional public service in protecting the public interest, the corrupting effects of Ontario’s ongoing electricity policy challenges appears to represent a substantial threat to the province’s future.

A comparison of the proposed Oulton turbine against Big Ben.

A controversial wind turbine application has been withdrawn after concerns were raised by Norwich International Airport and the Ministry of Defence.

The plan for the 77m-high structure on the disused second world war airfield in Oulton, near Aylsham, was submitted to Broadland District Council by Bernard Matthews Wind Energy Co-operative in February.

It was withdrawn on Monday because of “outstanding information” on how the developers, not-for-profit organisation Energy4All, would have overcome concerns.

The plan attracted vehement opposition from Oulton residents and surrounding villages because of its potential impact on the landscape.

Concerns were also raised by the National Trust and English Heritage because of its visual impact on Blickling Hall and the surrounding conservation area.

A spokesman for Energy4All said: “Energy4All is disappointed to confirm that the planning application for the single community wind turbine at Oulton has been withdrawn.

“We will continue to seek a resolution to the MoD objection, with the intention of resubmitting the application at an appropriate time.”

It is not known when a new application will be submitted.

An MoD spokesman said an objection was made because the turbine would be 18km from the Air Defence radar at Trimingham and would cause “unacceptable interference”.

Norwich International airport also objected because the turbine would interfere with its radar.

Oulton parish councillor Sam Booker said: “Pretty much everybody was against it. Everybody is pleased and relieved.”

There were 79 letters against the plan, objections from Cawston, Blickling, Oulton and Heydon parish councils and 10 letters of support.

Turbine Blade Manufacturer to Emit Air Pollution

New “Green” Manufacturing jobs in Ontario, will actually be emitting air pollutants including ammonia, petroleum distillates, ethylbenzene and suspended particulate matter.

We need your help, please let the Ontario government know how you feel about the permit for Turbine blade companies emitting Air Pollutants while making non-recyclable components! We only have 45 days…..go on the record!

Advertising Standards Authority says windfarms can’t be advertised as producing no health effects

In 2012 Scottish PowerRenewables claimed “There is no medical evidence to suggest that wind turbines affect health”. This claim appeared in the FAQ section of their web site promoting the Mynydd Mynyllod Windfarm in Wales. After a complaint to the ASA, and an investigation lasting more than nine months Scottish Power Renewables have assured the ASA that they will “make the basis for “make the basis for claims for health and wind farms clearer, claims for health and wind farms clearer, avoiding definitive claims”. avoiding definitive claims”.

Donna Tisdale’s home office looks like something out of an episode of the TV show Hoarders. Paperwork spills off a crowded desk. Boxes are strewn on the floor. Every inch of space is consumed with reports, educational mailers, studies, and oversized maps of green-energy projects slated for the community of Boulevard.

“Unfortunately, this is my full-time job right now,” she says. “It’s a whirlwind. Sometimes I stay up all night. Basically, it’s a shit storm, and it’s coming from all angles: our federal government, our state government, and our local government. They all want these green-energy projects.”

IMG_0420On Monday evening, a small group of rural Ontario residents protested, not unlike we’ve done every time Kathleen Wynne has flitted into a nearby town, wearing her ever-present grimace, and coordinating suit.  We have protested her in Strathroy, in Sarnia, we have protested her in Clinton and on Monday night she was in London to support the Liberal candidate, Ken Coran, in the upcoming by-election.  What was different about Monday night’s event was the treatment that our group received from the police and ‘security;’ as well as, how the camera operator for CTV was treated, by Wynne’s supporters, or as they more distinctly resemble—sheep; following blindly without question.

Surprise Ontarians!!  Kathleen Wynne, the first female, openly gay premier of our Province, whom you might believe to be a gentler and more accepting provincial honcho is in fact closer in leadership style to Hugo Chavez, or the late Kim Jong-il.  Under…

Amherst-Island-Proposed-Turbine-Map-pg-241-e1374163392387While we in the County bask in the glow of PECFN’s win in the Ostrander Point appeal, our friends on neighouring Amherst Island continue to fight hard to stop a major 37-turbine wind project  on their small island.  This project is as large as Ostrander Point and White Pines combined, proposed for an island which is only 1/15th  the size of PEC.  Picture the County with 555 turbines!  We can help our neighbours by taking a few minutes to compose and send an email on their behalf.
